Use a high pressure hose to spray the leaves into a pile. The wet leaves compress into trash bags more efficiently or they can be added to a mulch pile. Since they are wet the wind won't blow them back all over the yard again.

I have heard that a lot of wet leaves in a compost isn't that great for composting because it can result in a wet mush that doesn't break down so well... is there any truth in this?

Regarding wet leaves being too wet for composting, the pile probably needs to be ventilated periodically by poking holes in it with a shovel or a stick (depending on how large it is).
Another way to deal with fallen leaves on a grass lawn is to mow them with a lawn mower (using its collection bag). That way you take care of trimming the grass and picking up the leaves at the same time!
