Gardening tip of the week

Wait until late spring to trim back established hedging shrubs and trees such as lilacs, hornbeams and yew. Remove most or all of the new spring growth to retain the plant’s desired size. Keep new growth to fill in any unwanted gaps. Fading lilac blooms should be removed in a couple of weeks to prevent seed formation.
