Is Cornus kousa a tree or a shrub? Cornus kousa, the Chinese dogwood, can be trained either as a single trunk tree or multi-trunk shrub. These are the preferred dogwood by many gardeners since they largely escape the dreaded disease anthracnose that plagues the native dogwood.
