: Husband thinks I am mad to remove all the roots from pot before replanting. Help

We just removed the last fruit from one of our tomato plants and I want to start over. My honey takes out a couple of big pieces of root and then "hand tills" the rest. I'm fine with what ever works, but somehow this doesn't seem right. Please help. We have a mulch pile, which is where I believe most of this stuff belongs, but I don't know and I don't want to speculate.
