Just went to watch Brokeback Mountain today. I liked the movie, and I thought that it is a good movie, but I don't call it a great movie for the following reason.
Brokeback Mountain covers the time span of 20 years. Some people maintain youthful look for a period of time, but if you drink, smoke and take labor intensive jobs like riding horses, construction, etc., you will look older when you hit 40+. IMO, all (major) characters look too pretty while they go through pretty rough 20 years or so. If this were taken care of, then the movie could be 100% better.

So many westerns have this problem. In fact, most westerns are too polished.
The Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns are some of the best westerns because everyone is so dirty for the duration of the movie. Everyone looks aweful like they should.

What did you think about Pale Rider?

Pale Rider is a great movie. It's a little polished, but it fits the surroundings because it is in the mountains in the cold. There is a lot of green and not too much dust, so everyone can realistically stay pretty clean compared to those cowboys traveling on horseback through Mexico, for instance, or through the desert, like in some of Eastwood's other westerns.
