I drink tea and coffee regularly so perhaps I should do this ... (if I have a house plant or three).

Tea? What is in the tea that compares to the plant food you buy? I have never heard of it and I am not doubting you, but just have a curiosity.

Tea is acidic so it is helpful to plants that require acidic soil. However, it is not beneficial for plants that require neutral or alkaline soils.
