Amazon in talks for movie, TV downloads: NYT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Online retailer Amazon.com Inc is holding talks with three Hollywood studios on creating a service to allow consumers to download movies and television programs and copy them onto DVDs, the New York Times reported on Friday.

Citing three people briefed on the discussions, the Times said Amazon is in advanced negotiations with Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Brothers. The report did not give a timetable or estimate cost of such a service.

Such a fee-based service could compete with new video download options available at Apple Computer Inc.'s popular iTunes digital download store.

Hmmm ... this space is getting crowded.  Apple is doing this.  Google and Yahoo are also doing this though they approach differently.

I imagine movie downloading will rival music downloading when download speeds are no longer an issue. It would be nice to have an Internet connection at 100 Mbps...  :)

Doesn't South Korea have something like that already?

Really? That is pretty cool. I imagine it may be available on a large scale in the next 5 years.

Well, they have the fastest connection in the world as a country.  Maybe Singapore has a faster connection, but Singapore is a very small island.

I would think the increase in digital media security regarding books, music, movies, and software creates a demand for higher upload/download speeds. Now that these forms of entertainment are becoming digitally copyrighted and only delivered to valid purchasers, increased bandwidth should result in more sales.

Hmmm ... I don't know.  Publishers seem to be fighting against this.  I don't think they're embracing the technology.
