Google switches from Intel to AMD

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Search engine giant Google Inc. is switching its internal servers from microprocessors made by Intel Corp. to chips from rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), according to wire reports.

The reports, which cited Morgan Stanley as its source, said that Google has more than 200,000 internal servers worldwide. The search engine company has started to buy AMD’s 64-bit Opteron processors for almost all new purchases, according to the reports, which cited Morgan Stanley analyst Mark Edelstone.
The switch could be a blow for Intel and company chief executive Paul Otellini, who sits on Google's board.

This sounds like a good great news to AMD.  Does this affect AMD's market share?  Does this influence many engineers to switch from Intel to AMD?

It is hard to believe after all these years, AMD has been able to hang in there until they had a product that was attractive to customers not only because of price. It is a huge decision for Google to switch to AMD from Intel. Intel has to take note, because it could be the beginning of an exodus of customers if AMD is for real.

Intel was in a very critical situation in the early 90s.  Analysts and consultants were saying "Oh, high tech sector will be taken over by Japanese, and Intel is going down.  There is no way Intel or any other company can make chips in US and stay completive."  Intel made number of critical decisions; one of decisions was to move out of all microprocessor business expect for one, microprocessor for personal computers.  Intel came out strong and proved that critics were dead wrong.  Also Intel stayed in US and created jobs in US.  Though they seek researchers overseas in countries like India, China and Russia today, Intel is primarily a US company in terms of its production.  That's pretty impressive.

15 years passed.  So ..., now they're being chased.  Now they're being challenged instead of challenging against others.

I would imagine that this is very bad news for Intel.  If others see Google switching allegiance, then surely they may follow their example.

I don't know about average PC users, but those who run data centers surely think about switching to AMD.
