Adiantum pedatum
Five Finger Fern, Adiantum aleuticum
| From the moist, humid tropics and the cold Himalayas, these ferns thrive in a variety of areas. Most are used in shady woodland gardens, around ponds, as ground cover under shrubs such as Rhododendrons, or planted with Dicentra, Astilbe, Iberis, Narcissus or Primula. Others thrive in a shady rock garden. The tropical species are grown in greenhouses. Use dwarf types in indoor terrariums. All need moisture, so they do not do well where summers are hot and dry. The Himalayan native, Adiantum venustum, stays green in mild northern winters, but, like the others, dies back in frosts. Use fronds with cut flowers. Start by division. Watch for slugs and snails. |
One of the prettiest ferns and one of the earliest, it leafs out with spring flowers. Easy to grow, this United States native has dainty, finger-like fronds with black stems which grow to 2 feet tall.
