Albizia julibrissin

Silk Tree, Mimosa

These deciduous trees or shrubs are closely allied to Acacia. Their graceful, feathery foliage and clusters of powderpuff-like flowers make them a lovely lawn or patio tree in warmer climates. Some species are grown in greenhouses in colder areas. They are flat-topped, wide-spreading and low-branched. Leaves fold up at night or when touched. In autumn, bean-like seedpods follow flowers. Some litter from fallen flowers, seedpods and leaves. Easy to grow, they love dry or humid heat. Subject to dieback in colder northern locations. Grows fastest with regular water, but adapts to moderate watering and poor soils.
