Foxtail Grass

Gardeners pass off most of these hardy, undemanding grasses as weeds and pasture forage. But the variegated strains of Alopecurus pratensis make a colorful ground cover. Shear in early summer before they bloom, or let them be and enjoy the silky young 'foxtail' seedheads. A. lanatus, another attractive choice, needs a gravely soil like that of its natural habitat and dislikes soggy winters. Grow in sun or light shade in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil.

Small-growing and non-invasive, it forms a low upright mound, good for vertical contrast in flower borders, wild and rock gardens. Dislikes dry heat. Give partial shade in warmer climates. Cut back rangy growth in early spring to rejuvenate.
