Not a true hibiscus, these shrubs have earned the name with their glossy, tropical blossoms. Tuck one behind your ear, and you are ready for a luau! The lilac blue to deep purple flowers each last 2 or 3 days and bloom continuously during growing season. Leavaes are deeply lobed, like those of Oak or Geranium. They can take a few degrees of frost, but appreciate the shelter of a south-facing wall. Water well in growing season, but hold off when temperatures drop below 60º F. Mulch the roots during long cold spells. Prune long shoots right after flowering. |

Train for an elegant 5 to 8-foot display of dark green, deeply cut leaves and blue hibiscus-like flowers throughout the year. Choose 'Santa Cruz' for deep blue flowers, 'Monterey' is even more blue.
