Amaryllis belladonna

The true Amaryllis is just one species of flowering bulb from South Africa. Its straplike leaves appear after the showy flowers bloom on tall solid stalks. Fragrant flowers are usually pink, but white and purple varieties are available. Bulb is poisonous. Globe-shaped fruits burst to reveal seeds. Hardy outdoors to central New York. Other plants called Amaryllis are hybrids of Hippeastrum. In Zones 9 and 10, leave bulbs where they will not be disturbed for years. In colder climates, lift and store bulbs in winter.

Its common name comes from the naked flower stalk that rises in summer after its clump of leaves dries up. Long-lived and trouble-free, it grows in almost any soil.
