Amelanchier alnifolia

Western Serviceberry, Saskatoon Berry

Colorful in all seasons, these deciduous shrubs and trees are especially conspicuous in early spring. Their plentiful white flowers bloom briefly before or with the unfolding of the leaves. Young leaves are covered with soft, woolly white hairs. Fall color is yellow, red or orange. The gray bark is streaked with reddish fissures. The types with edible red or purple fruits (which taste like blueberries) soon grow into a large patch, and attract birds. Commonly called Shadbush, Shadblow or Serviceberry (pronounced "sarvisberry"). Tolerate a wide variety of soils. Start by seed or by suckers. Clear away fallen leaves and fruits to prevent blight.

This multi-stemmed shrub has white flowers which give way to bluish-purple berries. Fall brings strong yellow and red leaf color. Native Americans used the berries to make pemmican, one of their winter foods.
