| Lush, moss-like foliage of this low, dense evergreen blankets the ground, making it ideal for rock gardens, in crevices, creeping over rocks or planted in a dry wall. Sometimes used as a lawn substitute, although plant forms small mounds over time. To eliminate these, cut narrow strips out of the bumps and press the rest down. Many varieties of Sandwort are alpine, subarctic or arctic plants that tolerate harsh winters but do poorly in areas with hot, humid summers. Grow in gritty, poor soil. Most types produce small white flowers in late spring and summer, although Arenaria Purpurascens has starry lilac blooms in tight clusters. |
Good for trailing over walls, this vigorous European native is less weedy and invasive than some Sandworts. Plant in slightly acidic soil.
