Arundo donax variegata
| Growing plentifully along the banks of the Nile, this reed was well known to ancient Egyptians, who depicted it in their arts and used its flower cluster as the model for their equivalent of the letter A. Also common to Israel and other Bible lands, leading some authorities to believe that many Bible references to reeds are to Arundo. Stiff, hollow stems are used as musical instrument reeds and can double as plant stakes or fishing poles. Stems sometimes used to make screens, lattices or mats, and occasionally in light construction. Use this 8 to 20-foot plant for a striking, tropical accent in the garden, near swimming pools or other bodies of water but avoid soils with lots of clay. Propogate by dividing clumps or by placing a stem in water, where new, little plants will quickly sprout from every joint. |
Smaller and less hardy than the Giant Reed, this has white and green striped leaves. Good accent in back of flower borders or in large containers. Rejuvenate by cutting to the ground in spring.
