Athyrium filix-femina

Lady Fern

Generally easy to grow, Europe, Asia and the Americas each has its own species of Athyrium ferns. The Lady Fern and Japanese Painted Fern are commonly found in nurseries, though fern specialists sell other varieties. Evergreen in mild climates, fronds turn brown after a few winters. These dead leaves shelter new growth in spring and act as mulch. Deciduous, so purchase during the growing season so you can see what you are getting. Divide old ferns in early spring for new plants.
