The name of this mat-forming plant honors a French botanical artist, Claude Aubriet, who died in 1743. A low-growing, perennial that grows in the wild in mountain areas, it is good for rock gardens, stone patios or between stepping stones. Combine with bulbs or with other early-spring flowering plants such as Rockcress, Alyssum and Phlox. Best in areas with cool summers and moderate winters, and requires good drainage. Shear back plants after flowering to 6 to 8 inches to keep them compact and encourage new growth. After trimming, top dress with gritty soil and bone meal. |

The only commonly grown type of Aubrieta, with long, branching stems and spoon-shaped leaves. Often seen in the Northwest, it grows in the wild from the eastern Mediterranean region to Iran.
