Banksia ericifolia

Heath-Leaved Banksia

These trees and shrubs are native to Australia, and have been garden favorites there since the 19th century. Popular in the southern United States, their spikes of yellowish to reddish flowers turn into woody, cylindrical, conelike spikes of fruit. Will not tolerate frost, so plant against a wall or where they have shelter from evergreen or other woodland trees. Several are known for tolerating temperate coastal conditions.
