Begonia grandis
Hardy Begonia, Begonia evansiana
| Grown as annuals, perennials and bulbs, Begonias are valued for their bright, colorful, waxy flowers. Annual varieties -- Wax, Fibrous or Bedding Begonias -- are low-growing and bloom continually. Covered with small white, red, or pink flowers with green or bronzy red foliage, use as edging in masses, window boxes and containers. Wax Begonias can take full sun, but do best in partial shade in hot summer areas. Bring indoors in the fall as a house plant. A hardy species, Begonia grandis, thrives in partial shade. Tuberous Begonias do not flower as fully as Wax Begonias, but bloom larger. Flowers resemble camellias, roses, carnations, poppies or daffodils. They come in pink, apricot, yellow, orange or white, with single, double, ruffled, bicolor, crested and fringed petals. To add bright color in shade, place them in containers or bedding. Use pendulous forms in hanging baskets. All types need moisture, so do not let soil dry out. Avoid wetting foliage, and provide good air circulation to prevent leaf mildew. Watch for aphids, spider mites, scale, slugs, snails and whiteflies. Lift tubers in fall and store. |
