Beschorneria yuccoides

Like their cousins, the Agaves, these Mexican natives make a bold centerpiece for the succulent or rock garden. Rosettes of succulent leaf blades with finely toothed edges grow up to 6 feet long. A reddish stem bears showy tiers of green-tinged red flowers with brick-red bracts. Named for a German botanist, Friedrich Beschorner. Does best with plenty of sun and rich, well-drained soil. Cannot take much frost. Where winters are cold, grow smaller container plants that can be moved inside. Feed potted plants in spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer.

The best-known and hardiest, it can tolerate light frost, but does better with shelter in a mild coastal climate. The 6-foot flower stalk, often tilted, bears bright green, yellow-tinged flowers on red branches. A gray waxy coating may cover the mature leaves.
