Bignonia capreolata

Large, funnel-shaped flowers cover the single species, Bignonia capreolata, of this evergreen climber from the eastern United States. It is a favorite in Southern gardens for blanketing walls, trellises and arbors. Climbs by tendrils that attach to wood and masonry and reaches 60 feet long. Tolerates heat. Plant in full sun or shade. Prune to shape. Start new plants from seeds or cuttings.

Its bright orange-red spring flowers have yellow to red throats. Seed capsules that follow change from green to brown. Deep green leaves turn purplish in winter. Excellent in lowland gardens where fertile soil gets plenty of moisture.
