Bletilla striata

Chinese Ground Orchid, Bletilla hyacinthiana

Members of the Orchid family, these plants are inexpensive and easy to grow. Grown in woodland gardens and in pots for their groups of 1 to 2 inch lavender flowers. Their grassy leaves are pleated. They come from temperate eastern Asia, so are hardy only down to 20º F. Mulch in colder climates. Plant in dappled sun and shade. Blooms best when crowded.

Plant tuberlike roots under the cover of trees or a lath. Often develops in a clump.
