Brownea macrophylla

Nicknamed the 'Rose-of-Venezuela', these small evergreen trees are grown for their 8-inch-wide clusters of scarlet or pink flowers. Bloom starts from the outside, one circle of flowers a day until the center circle opens. The blooms grow on the tips of branches or hang among the foliage. Leathery leaves are limp and colorless or reddish when young. Fruits are flat pods. Native to the moist lowlands of tropical America, these are not commonly grown in the United States, except in hothouses. Will not tolerate dry soil.
