These 250 reed-like grasses grow in the temperate Northern Hemisphere and have long leaves that are linear and flat or channeled. They flower with dense, compressed spikelets in the summer.

Swaying 2 feet above the grassy blades, purplish new flower spikes mature to a golden wheat color. Good for meadows, erosion control and coastal settings, as it tolerates wind and salt spray. Keep soil moist.
