Pot Marigold
| Grown since Elizabethan times, Pot Marigolds' early season pompom flowers bloom in orange, yellow, apricot, cream and white. Double-flowering, red and black-eyed varieties are also available. The petals are edible and can be used fresh and dried to flavor cakes, puddings, soups, salads and rice dishes. Unlike the common garden Marigold (Tagetes), Pot Marigolds need cool weather during spring and early summer to grow and bloom well. In mild winter areas, they withstand light frosts, so plant in fall for winter and early spring bloom. Sow seed from late winter to early spring for spring bloom, and mid- to late-summer for fall bloom. When transplanting, be careful not to damage the long, thin taproots. |
An extremely early flowering dwarf, it is also somewhat heat tolerant. Flowers are 2½ to 3 inches across in lemon, apricot, bright yellow and orange.
