Named for the daughter of the river god Achelous, their big cup-shaped, crimson and magenta flowers dance on long slim stems above pretty hand-shaped leaves. Perennials with thick taproots, they thrive in hot sun and poor soil, and most survive frost to 5º F. Excellent flowers for hard-to-reach corners of a dry rock garden, also fine for mixed borders. Callirhoe involucrata (Purple Poppy Mallow) spreads a low mat of leaves, brightened in summer with violet blossoms. Give full sun and well-drained sandy soil. Transplant with care, keeping the tuberous roots as intact as possible. Grow from seed, by division or from cuttings in summer. |

This bright perennial grows trailing to upright. The flowers are crimson-purple to cherry red.
