Carpinus betulus fastigiata
European Hornbean, Common Hornbeam
Long used for hedges in formal gardens, these slow-growing deciduous trees tolerate severe pruning. They are also known as Ironwood because their wood is extremely hard. They have delicate wiry twigs, smooth gray bark and light green fruit clusters. Their dense, sawtooth-edged leaves turn color in the fall. Plant in a lawn or park, especially along a brook. These long-lived trees tolerate periodic flooding, but need some winter chill. |

Its narrow columnar shape becomes somewhat irregular and pyramidal with age.
