Cerastium tomentosum

Snow in Summer

This ground cover forms dense carpets of hairy, gray leaves smothered by clusters of bright white flowers for several weeks in late spring. Snow in Summer cascades over walls out of containers or fills in between low shrubs or stepping stones. Easy to grow where summers are cool, but rots in hot, humid areas. Wind-resistant, they tolerate mild and cold climates, seaside or desert areas. Shorter-lived than other ground covers, they need little water once established, but water regularly for fast growth. The creeping plant, Cerastium bierbersteinii, has larger leaves and flowers than the more common species, Cerastium tomentosum. Sold in small containers. Shear faded flower clusters. Divide in fall or early spring.
Cerastium tomentosum, Snow in Summer
Popular, its many white woolly leaves grow to 6 inches. A rock garden favorite, it can be invasive. Grows even in sand. Varieties 'Silver Carpet' and 'Yo-Yo' are more refined and compact than others.
