Ceratonia siliqua
Carob Tree, St. John's Bread
The peapod-shaped fruits of these long-lived trees are used as a sweet chocolate and coffee subsititute, though the taste of carob powder is different. In arid soils, yields a large, protein-rich food crop. Widely grown in warm regions, these evergreens can be trained into a multi-stemmed shrub. Use as a large hedge or a single-trunked tree. Flower odor and seed pod litter can be a problem. Plant far from sidewalks, as roots break up pavement. Water deeply and infrequently to prevent root rot. Protect young trees in winter. Resists root fungus and fire injury. |

Dense, sparkling, dark green foliage is dotted with small red flowers in spring. Flat leathery pods on female trees are dark brown.
