These tropical palms are grown outdoors in shady, moist sites in Zone 10 only. Use indoors as understory trees. Indoors, they are popular, thornless, tough-leafed houseplants. They thrive in low light with little water in warm rooms with high humidity. Within the 100 species, size and foliage vary. They range from a few inches tall to 8 feet. Their tubular flowers become black or red fruits. Prone to nematodes.
