Desert Willow, Desert Catalpa

This flowering desert shrub or tree belongs to the same family as the Catalpa. It is found in washes and stream beds from Texas to California and Mexico. Twisting trunks are covered by shaggy bark. Grows rapidly, so prune to shape. Give periodic, deep, summer water. Flowers best in climates with hot summers.

Trumpet-shaped, fragrant, spring flowers appear on the tree for many weeks, followed by long seed capsules. Lilac-colored flowers with two yellow stripes attract birds.
