| Most members of this huge group are trailing evergreen vines, offering a vast choice of leaf shapes, colors and textures. Glossy, velvety, toothed, lobed, even succulents are available. They are a cool delight spilling out of window boxes and hanging baskets, or as a ground cover by pools. Grape Ivy (Cissus rhombifolia) and Kangaroo Vine (Cissus antarctica) make ideal houseplants, tolerating low light and dry air. Outdoors, hardy types like Marine Ivy (Cissus trifoliata) cover arbors and pillars. In a group this large, care needs vary widely. Generally not too particular about soil, water or fertilizer. A few, especially the succulents, need full sun. Most prefer shade. Cissus discolor, with white-mottled velvety-green leaves, demands shade. Tender tropical species need high humidity. Tougher-leafed types can take drier conditions. Fertilize container plants regularly, spring to fall, with diluted liquid fertilizer. Prune only to thin crowded pots or control size. Pinch the tips for fuller plants. All are easy to propagate from seed, cuttings or layering. Watch for scale, mealybugs, red spider mites, and aphids. |
