Clematis 'Madame Edouard Andre'
The garden edict of keeping their heads in the sun and toes in the shade is fitting for these vines. Mulch to keep ground temperatures cool and moist, but give direct sun to encourage their large, showy blooms. Many will thrive in partial sun locations, especially in hot-summer climates. Plants attach to supports with twining leafstalks, and so climb up trellises, walls, poles, and trees and over shrubs. Prune to control size, encourage fuller, lower growth and vigorous flowering. Spring-blooming Clematis flower on last year's growth, so prune after flowering. Summer and fall bloomers flower on current spring growth, so prune in the late fall or early spring. Those that bloom in spring and again in summer or fall flower on last year's growth in spring and on new growth in summer or fall. Only light pruning is needed in fall or early spring. Watch for stem-rot, leaf-spot, wilt and mildew. |

This French hybrid dates from the turn of the century. Its 5-inch-wide, saucer-shaped red flowers have creamy white stamens and resemble a large Dogwood flower.
