Corallorhiza maculata

Spotted Coralroot, Large Coralroot

These low-growing orchids are named for their much-branched rhizomes that have the color and shape of ocean coral. Found in the woods and on roots in Canada and the northern United States, the plants are inconspicuous. Though they have small, 2-lipped, yellowish flowers in late autumn, they have no green foliage -- their leaves become brownish bracts. They also have no chlorophyll by which to create food from air and water. Instead, the remarkable rhizomes take in nutrients from dead plant material and insects in the earth. Plant in posts or shady borders. Require rich soil.

This perennial has pinkish flower stems which carry spotted flowers. Difficult to cultivate.
