| Easy, pleasing ground covers from the Daisy family, their cheery yellow or white flower buttons spangle a carpet of feathery leaves. They grow worldwide where winters are mild and summers on the cool side. Compact, low-growing Cotula perpusilla and its linearis subspecies neatly fill in the gaps around paving stones, and make good lawn substitutes. Marsh-loving Cotula coronopifolia spreads rapidly along the edges of ponds and streams. Introduced from South Africa, it has colonized marshlands all along the West Coast. Fine in sun or partial shade. Need a moist, coarse, freely draining soil, humus-rich but not too fertile. One species, Cotula squalida, takes considerable frost, but blooms more modestly. Grow new plants from fresh seed or division. |
