Female cones are narrowly winged, while male cones grow in clusters. Grow in mild climates, and shelter from strong winds. Damaged by cold temperatures, but can resprout new branches from trunk.
It is popular for its exotic Christmas tree and bluish green foliage. Bark is fibrous and rich reddish-brown. 'Glauca' variety has more bluish green leaves than the species.
