Cyathea australis
Australian Tree Fern, Cyathea cooperi, Alsophila
From the tropical regions of both hemispheres come these fast-growing, evergreen tree ferns. With pruning, they can also be tub plants for a patio or greenhouse. Their finely cut, bright green fronds are cold-hardy to 20º F, but not without some damage to the plant. Good in coastal regions or sheltered valleys, grow them in full sun in foggy areas and partial shade elsewhere. When pruning, wear a complete covering of protective clothing as some parts of the plant irritate the skin. |

Sometimes sold as Cyathea cooperi, this graceful fern can grow best in a humid atmosphere. At a rate of 1 foot to 6 feet each year, it eventually reaches 20 feet high by 12 feet wide.
