Cyperus papyrus

Papyrus, Galingale

Water-loving, these tall, striking perennials grow best near pools or partly submerged in shallow water. In pots outdoors, keep soil moist. In containers indoors, grow in water 2 to 6 inches deep. Palm-like leaves atop bare stems are green to reddish-brown. Use in fresh or dried arrangements. Full sun or shade, but will not tolerate frost. Start by division or seeds sown in spring or early autumn. Remove dead or broken stems and leaves.
Cyperus papyrus, Papyrus, Galingale
Used by ancient Egyptians for making paper, this graceful, 5 to 8-foot-tall, water plant has stalks topped by tufts of 12 to 18-inch-long, thread-like leaves. Killed by frost, so take indoors or discard.
