Cyrtanthus elatus

Scarborough Lily, Vallota speciosa, George Lily

This group has only one species, Vallota speciosa (known mostly as Cyrtanthus elatus). Part of the Amaryllis family, its funnel-shaped scarlet flowers bloom in summer on tall leafless stalks. The strap-shaped leaves grow near the base of the stalk. This deer-proof perennial is generally grown in greenhouses. However, you can plant bulbs in outdoor pots when fall night temperatures stay above 65º F. Bring them indoors before first frost. Return plants outdoors in full sun in summer. Keep soil moist during the plant's resting. Repot after flowering. Disturb roots as little as possible.
