Daphne odora 'Aureo-marginata'

Winter Daphne, Fragrant Daphne

Full clusters of fragrant blooms in early spring -- and in early summer, tiny, bright fruits -- all parts of these evergreen trees and shrubs are poisonous. Flowers range from pink to white to deep red, and leaves are green or green edged with gold. All need fast-draining soil, so use in rock gardens and containers. Grow in borders near walkways or under windows where you can catch their perfume. Since they grow well in full sun or light shade, you can plant them under trees or on the north side of the house. One problem with these plants is that they sometimes die suddenly for no known reason. Mulch to keep roots cool in summer. Buy in containers, with their root balls in burlap, or start from cuttings, not bare-root plants.
