This is called the Gas Plant because of an unusual characteristic -- on warm, calm nights the plant will emit an oil that ignites if a match is held just below the blooms. One of the most long-lived perennials, it sometimes flourishes for more than 50 years. Although its flowers are not particularly showy, the Gas Plant has clean-looking, glossy foliage that smells like lemons and attractive seed pods that look good in dried arrangements. Needs plenty of space and time -- possibly 3 to 4 years -- to show its full beauty. These do not like to be moved, but once established, they need little care. |

These long-lived, deep purple flowers smell like lemon. All parts of plant are poisonous.
