Dyckia encholiriodes
| Unlike most Bromeliad groups, these grow on the ground from thick rhizomes, forming stemless rosettes of spiny-edged, curving leaves. Desert-lovers, they fit right in with Agaves, Cacti and succulents in a rock garden. Easily confused with the Hechtias, their more compact growth makes them a better choice for tight spaces. Container plants add a striking sculptural accent to a deck or patio. Grow in full sun and very gritty, porous soil. In a garden bed, they send down deep roots and in time may need no watering. Water young plants and containers moderately from spring to fall, and sparingly in winter. Can handle long cold spells as long as temperatures stay above freezing. Need repotting only every few years. Grow more from seed or by dividing the rhizomes. |
Sparse teeth with curved spines edge the stiff, smooth leaves, 1 to 3 feet long. Many red or yellow flowers bloom on a branching stalk.
