These more than 1000 species of popular orchids are easy to grow in pots and baskets or in specially prepared beds outdoors. Flowers in many shapes and colors. Hardy to 28º F, but prefer a temperate greenhouse. Locate outdoors in sun, and mulch to keep roots cool. Plant in a mix of fir or bark in potting soil. Let plant dry out between watering. When bloom fades, cut back to within 1 or 2 joints from the ground.

Its 2 to 4-foot, reed-like, leafy stems form a scrambling growth, topped by a cluster of red to yellow flowers.
