Erica 'Dawn'

Heath

A large group of shrubs or ground covers, these evergreens have small, needle-like leaves and many small, brightly-colored flowers that attract bees. Good on slopes, in rock gardens or containers. Also found in Shakespeare gardens. Use taller types as screens. Members of the Heather family, the most cold-tolerant types come from northern and western Europe. A native Mediterranean type tolerates some cold, while South African varieties do not like frost at all. Garden artists plant several ground cover types to create a colorful carpet. Need excellent drainage and most like acid soil. Where air is moist, plant in full sun. Elsewhere, give partial shade. Prune branches that have flowered. Protect plants from winds and water during dry periods.
