Torch Ginger, Phaeomeria magnifica, Phillipine Waxflower
| These huge exotics can overwhelm all but the grandest gardens. If you have a jungle complete with waterfall, they could provide the finishing touch. Huge waxy flowerheads consist of petal-like bracts that unfold to reveal curly yellow or white, tonguelike flowers. The equally enormous leaves resemble those of banana plants. They demand high humidity, bright filtered light and rich, fibrous soil. Water generously, but somewhat less after flowering. If planted in a tub, which helps to control size, feed every two weeks with liquid fertilizer. Divide and repot in spring, cutting out old flower stems, and mulch with well-decayed manure. |
Magnificent in large flower arrangements, they reach heights of 20 feet in the jungle. Red Torch blooms a solid crimson. Pink Torch unfurls outer bracts shading from white centers to pink-red edges.
