German Violet, Persian Violet
| Florists sell them as German, Persian or Arabian Violets. Their fragrant, densely-packed purple, blue or white flowers with prominent yellow stamens bloom from summer into fall. Exacum trinervium macranthum produces the largest flowers, up to 2 inches, with pointed petals of rich purple-blue. Grow outdoors year-round only in the humid tropics and subtropics. In cooler zones, plant summer annuals in beds and borders after the last frost. Three to 5 plants massed in a 6-inch pot make a delightful living bouquet for a deck or sunny window garden. Need plenty of light, with shade from intense midday sun, and fertile, well-drained soil. Best with temperatures above 50º F. Feed potted plants with very diluted fertilizer for long blooming. Seeds sprout in 2 to 3 weeks. Keep seedlings in partial shade. Seeds sown in late summer produce the largest plants. Seeds sown January through March, the smallest. Subject to damping-off, stem gall and canker, and Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV), formerly Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus. |
