Filipendula ulmaria

Meadowsweet, Spiraea ulmaria, Dropwort

These 2- to 4-foot-tall plants boast feathery plumes of tiny flowers on leafy stems. Planted behind a border, their dense lush leaves make excellent background for other flowering plants. Found wild in moist and boggy soils, they tolerate dryer soil. These long-lived plants go dormant in winter. Flower best in full sun, but tolerate light shade. Divide in early spring when new growth starts. Sow seed in early fall.
