Fittonia verschaeffeltii argyroneura + paercei

Mosaic Plant, Nerve Plant, Silver Nerve

Etched with intricate contrasting veins, the tender leaves of these low-creeping plants make a striking ground cover or border for tropical gardens and conservatories. Popular houseplants in colder climates, they demand high warmth and humidity, and can venture outdoors only when days and nights stay sultry. Dainty stalks bear modest flowers. Hybrids and cultivars offer variations on the two species, Fittonia argyoneura (Silver-Nerved) and Fittonia verschaffeltii (Red-Nerved). They need indirect, filtered light and a coarse, fertile, moisture-retentive soil. Keep soil moist, but not water-logged. Terrariums provide ideal humidity. Setting pots on a tray of wet gravel also helps. Plant several to a pot and pinch new growth often for a lush dome of foliage. Feed well-established potted plants monthly with diluted liquid fertilizer. Best with day temperatures of 75 to 85º F, nights 65 to 70º F, though they bloom longer with dips to 55º F. Grow easily from cuttings in spring or early summer. Subject to scales, mealybugs and slugs.
