| Rapid-growing Ash trees are important both in the landscape and as a timber crop. They reach 80 feet and provide dense shade. Most commonly grown White and Green Ashes are used as street, lawn or shade trees. In spring, trees are covered with clusters of small flowers that become winged seeds. Plant male cultivars only, as seeds cause a litter problem and weedy growth of seedlings. Ashes adapt to any soil, including alkaline. Water during growing season, less after established. Prune in fall, if needed. Easily transplanted. Watch for borers. |
Pyramidal in shape when young, it spreads and becomes more open with age. Leaflets are velvety beneath, while the upper surface is either dull and hairy or bright green and glossy. Good in dry, hot areas with alkaline soil.
